Hoodoo, not to be confused with Voodoo, evolved in the Mississippi Delta where slavery was dense, spreading Southeast and North along the Mississippi as slaves began leaving in the 1930's. Hoodoo is an African-American tradition typically passed down through the generations. Unlike similar practices, Hoodoo is not a religion, traditionally practitioners are Christian. There is a common misconception that all Hoodoo is used in harmful, selfish ways, when if fact Hoodoo can also be used to achieve luck in different aspect of life, including money, health, love, fame, and success. Hoodoo typically includes the use of herbs, roots, minerals, animal body parts, personal possessions, and bodily fluids or another form of DNA.

There are two different types of hoodoo, Rootwork and Conjure. While most practitioners can easily do rootworking, Conjure takes more time, effort, and knowledge.

Rootwork is mostly influential, giving people either good luck or bad luck. Rootwork typically involves making charms to be carried with the person they are to effect. Rootwork can give yourself good luck or cause someone else bad luck. Rootwork typically can't be used to harm another, cause love, or force an event to happen.

Conjure is used for the things Rootwork can not do. This may include causing harm to others, death in extreme cases, forcing love or other emotions, or causing an event to happen. Conjure can use charms in a similar way to Rootwork, but may include multiple placements of multiple charms, including under beds, in clothing, at place of work, or behind doorways. Conjure may use more powerful sources to enchant they charms, including praying and harnessing crossroads power.
